['kjuː 'gɑːdnz], im Auftrag der Prinzessin Augusta von Sachsen-Gotha (* 1719, ✝ 1772) von Sir W. Chambers 1758/59 konzipierter und unter Einfluss des chinesischen Gartenstils architektonisch ausgestalteter Landschaftsgarten in Kew (heute zu Richmond upon Thames, London). Die Anlage wurde unter Leitung des Botanikers Sir William J. Hooker (* 1785, ✝ 1865) zum Königlichen Botanischen Garten erweitert und 1841 der Öffentlichkeit zugänglich gemacht. Prunkstück ist das »Palmenhaus«, das 1844-48 von Decimus Burton und Richard Turner errichtet und 1985-88 vollständig restauriert wurde. Auf einem 120 ha großen Gelände werden heute rd. 45 000 Pflanzen kultiviert, zahlreiche Gewächshäuser und eine Bibliothek unterhalten, die die umfassendste taxonomische botanische Literatur der Erde enthält. In Kew Gardens werden auch wichtige Forschungen durchgeführt (u. a. zur Gewinnung neuer Nutzpflanzen, zur Rettung bedrohter Pflanzenarten und Klassifizierung neu entdeckter Pflanzen).
